Bless Our Mead (The Yeast Herders’ Anthem)

Credits

Kitchen witchery skills abound among the Crow Women, and mead-making is one of our favorite types of kitchen magic. Alane Crowomyn wrote the song Bless Our Mead. She has used it to bless many a meeting of “yeast herders”; those who make mead, wine, beer and other concoctions. Alane sings lead on this track, with the Crow choir adding the flavors of kazoos and self-important voices to the mix. This song is track 24 on Crow Magic, available here.

Lyrics

Yeast herders, we, we brew the mead
Sharing ancient craft, we honor the yeast
The magic of you brings forth the sacred brew
Yeast, wee beasts, bless our mead

Spirits of east, dance on the breeze
Fly to the hive, noble honeybees
The magic of you brings forth the sacred brew
Honeybees, bless our mead

Spirits of south, fire in our mead
through alchemy of brewing, potency is freed
The magic of you brings forth the sacred brew
Fi/re freed, bless our mead

Spirits of west, mead flowing free
Water and honey join into mead
The magic of you brings forth the sacred brew
Flu/id sweet, bless our mead

Spirits of north, flavor our mead
with flowers and fruits, spices and seeds
The magic of you brings forth the sacred brew
Fruits of earth, bless our mead

God of the Brew, Goddess of Mead
Bless us, your brewers, join our party
The magic of you brings forth the sacred brew
Bless our mead, bless our mead
Bless our mead, bless our mead
Bless our mead, bless our mead
Bless our mead, bless our mead      music & lyrics © Alane Susan Brown (ASCAP) 2009

Lughnassad plum mead

As Lughnassad approaches, I am excited to harvest my favorite fruit for mead making: wild plums. The fruit heavily loads down the branches of a tree behind my house as I wait in anticipation until they have ripened to sweet perfection. Which is perfect timing for giving thanks at the first harvest...

Pomona’s Promise Pear Mead

Today I had the pleasure of inventing a new recipe for mead with Sylvia, mead mistress extraordinaire. She had a lot of gallon bags of pears in her freezer; gifts from friends with pear trees who know that brewers are always happy to accept ingredients for mead. (Brewers who have chest freezers...
