Initiation Rites

In most pagan and Wiccan circles, a new person will attend for a period of time as an observer. They then begin participating more, perhaps attend classes, perhaps work with a mentor. Eventually the time comes to take the step of becoming a member.

All the stable circles and covens we know of have some sort of ritual to mark a person joining the group. This rite may be called a dedication or an initiation. Some systems have levels of expertise, for example First Degree, Second Degree and Third Degree, each of which is marked with an initiation ceremony. Some groups are very open about the nature of these rites, others keep the details as oath-bound secrets.
