pagan rites of passage songs from Crow Women

Crow Magic

Crow Magic is the Crow Women’s second album, released in 2012. You can buy it here. After the heady excitement of releasing our first CD in 2006, we plunged into a flurry of songwriting. Alane in particular just kept pouring out music, and a crazy 18 songs of hers ended up on this album. As the pressure to share all this new music built up, we had a meeting to look over the songs that had been created since Crow Goddess was finished. It was a long list. Donna and Alane put forth a proposal to split the material into two shorter albums. But the band found it too hard to say “no” to any of the songs and decided to put it all on one record. It was great to be back in the studio. We took our production values up a notch, making use of the experience we had gained in our previous album.

Crow Magic explores mainly two realms of magic. One is the elements of fire, earth, air, water and spirit. The other is rites of passage. The rites tracks that are sprinkled across the album tell a story of becoming a woman, being pregnant, wiccaning the newborn, divorce, and becoming a crone. There are also rites of passage songs for initiation and for releasing the spirit of a familiar. Crow Magic has some tracks that don’t fit either of those two themes, but are magical in other ways, such as honoring the moon or sun. Or mead-making magic! We hope you enjoy this album of original songs written by members of the Crow Women.
