“Please Bless This Space”

Songs and Chants for Clearing Sacred Spaces

Space Clearings and Home Blessings are essential tools for creating safe and powerful containers for Ritual, Healing, and Magick.  We all have certain spaces where we spend most of our time.  Whether it be our bedrooms, cars, our workspaces, or even our heart space;  adding songs and chants, rhythm and melody with daily practices promotes higher vibrations.  This spacial consciousness supports us in becoming more fully present to our highest potential.

All Around. Below, Above.

When a space is visibly messy we begin by picking it up.  We wash the dishes.  We sweep the floors.  We clear the surfaces.  But what of the “mess” in our energy field that most of us cannot visibly see?  Clearing clutter will no doubt uplift the energy in a space.  It comes with the territory.  But have you ever walked into a spotless space but felt something was “off”?  Clearing the energy field will take any space to a whole new level.

When I perform a concert I like to start by honoring the space where all have gathered.  I begin with a song I wrote specifically for this purpose called “Please Bless This Space” off my Carry Me Home Album.  I typically loop this song as a chant.  Each time the chant comes around again I add another layer to create a choir of enchantment by the end.  (See my article on Looping:  “Conjure a Choir of Enchantment”)

“Please Bless This Space” Lyrics and Links

Please Bless This Space.
This Sanctuary.
All Around. Below. Above.
Please Bring Us Peace and Protection.
May all who enter be nourished with love.
Alleluia. Amen. Aho, Blessed Be, Allow it in.
Alleluia. Amen. Aho, Blessed Be, So it is.

Something magical happens when I begin concerts this way.  The energy field clears.  The room is filled with positive intention. Minds, bodies, and spirits become fully present.  Anxiety settles.  It’s almost as if a portal opens to another place.  A realm of peace, joy, and harmony.  A safe space where we can all just simply BE for a spell.   Magic is felt & a spiral of healing & creative energy begins to rise..

I can’t explain it.  It just happens.

The “Please Bless This Space” Backstory:

I wrote “Please Bless This Space” on one of my many tours.  I remember singing to myself  (as I often do) while driving from New Mexico to Arizona.  I was fantasizing about writing a whole album of blessing chants.  Blessings of intentions for transitions & beginnings. Blessings for meals, blessings for beginnings of journeys, cleansing blessings for showers and baths, a waking up blessing, a going to sleep blessing, a first sip of coffee blessing…you get the idea.

“Please Bless This Space” is the only song thus far that was fully birthed from this fantasy of creating a blessing album.  And it has accompanied me ever since. I added “Please Bless This Space” to my repertoire and my Carry Me Home album, and it has since become one of my most beloved songs for preparing & blessing spaces for group rituals and private practices.

Peace, Protection, and Love:  How to use “Please Bless This Space” for YOUR Magickal Mojo:

Over the years I have gotten feedback from countless people who use the chant in their various daily practices.  I have heard from metaphysical shop owners, massage therapists, healers, ministers, new home owners, travelers, yogis, meditators, and many more about the impact blessing spaces with this song has made on their lives.

Gatherings & Celebrations:

pagan songwriter Celia Farran with drum

“As a part of my long running annual Winter Solstice Celebration with friends, we begin our evening with a shared dinner.  Before indulging in yumminess, Celia Farran’s song “Please Bless This Space” has been used as an invocation to set the space in which our celebration is to take place.  This past year we were blessed to have her in attendance to sing it live. It set the tone for the whole evening. So wonderful!”

Circles, Rituals, & Beyond:

“I first heard Celia Farran’s Please Bless This Space in 2015. I went to a UU church in Minneapolis, & attended a women’s circle. It was played first in a string of songs, and I couldn’t get it out of my heart. I went home and bought a CD online.

“I use it for cleansing the space, and setting my intention to have a sacred place to just be, even if it is just in the car. It helps me visualize a protective bubble that I carry with me throughout my day. I’ve shared it numerous times. One of my favorite things about it is that it touches the hearts of people of all faith walks, truly it does.”
– Minna Brandser

Political Unrest:

“During the 2011 protests in Madison, WI I went to the Capitol Building and sat quietly in a corner on a marble bench, with the echoing chaos all around, & sang to myself several times softly “Please Bless this Space”. No one heard. No one knew, but the spirits of goodness heard & knew.  There was so much anger & fear & turbulence that I felt called to anchor bright blessings with this song.”
– Mary F.

Healing Spaces:

“One of my go to morning rituals in setting the energy and intention at my healing studio, Awen Tree, is to play Celia Farran’s Song “Please Bless This Space”.  Her incredible voice and grace-filled lyrics inspire me and definitely shift the entire space into a very elevated vibration.  Celia has a very special way of touching the sacred with song.”
– Winnifred Tannetta Costello, Intuitive Healer, Tarot Reader, & Proprietress of Awen tree www.awentree.com

“I am an intuitive medical massage therapist, a Reiki Master, and a certified foot and hand reflexologist.  I use all of these techniques and more to create a beautiful, relaxing, and safe space for myself and my clients.  I use Please Bless This Space by Celia Farran often and especially after I have a client that has had a traumatic event or we talk about difficult things. I love using Please Bless This Space.”

For Travel:  Hotels & Air bnb Spaces

“We walk in & chant the “Please Bless This Space” prayer twice.  We sometimes burn Palo Santo or Sage.  It cleanses the home & helps us feel more connected to the space.  We have also done this on the way out of the space, in gratitude & to prepare it for the next occupants.
– Aly Mcdonnell, Author
  & Jake Goren

Retail Space:

“When I owned my metaphysical gift shop (North Earth) I would begin the day with Celia’s beautiful & uplifting “Please Bless This Space” as I made ready for the day. I would also occasionally play it for space cleaning and renewal of intention throughout the day.  Celia’s clean energy in words and voice uplift and cleanse.  This song settled me into the peaceful now, connected me to my spiritual intention and opened the space into alignment with the greater “All Is”.  The shift in energy was palpable.”

More Songs for Clearing & Blessing Spaces:

As I was researching songs for space/home blessings some lovely surprises emerged.  I asked my pagan songsmith friend S.J. Tucker if she had any songs for clearing blessing spaces.  She said; “No, but now you’ve got me writing one. Right now. I’m serious.”

How cool is THAT?

So here is an excerpt from the forthcoming song by S.J. Tucker:  https://sjtucker.com/

“Bless the space in which I stand
By my steady heart & hand
By will, by water, by air, fire, & land.
Sweeping & releasing
Make room for what I’m keeping, seeking
Here inside the egg of me
My own place protected be
Here inside the world of me
My own place blessed be”

Working title “Within”, by S.J. Tucker

My friend Alane Brown (who happens to be the editor of the Pagan Song blog) had a similar response. She told me; “I have a song I’ve used a lot in ritual, and will be recording it this year. We sing it while creating sacred space by first sprinkling the space with salt water and then by smudging or wafting incense or around the space. Its purpose is to cleanse and charge the place with the help of the elements, and to clear the mind & space for sacred work.”

“Cleanse this space with salt and water
purify it, purify it”
(repeat as many times as it takes to asperge the space with saltwater)

“Charge this space with air and fire,
purify it, purify it”
(repeat as many times as it takes to cleanse the space with incense or smudge)
when the purification with the elements is complete, finish by singing:
“Enter into sacred space, in this clear and blessed place”

“Circle Purification Chant” by Alane Brown, forthcoming from her new duo Pan Fried

When I asked my friend Selena Fox if she had any home blessing chants to contribute she not only shared three but was inspired to make time in her busy schedule to record You Tube videos of them for us.

“I circle my home with Light, to protect it Day and Night,
To guard my home, to bless my home, I circle my home with Light”

“Bless this place as Sacred Space.”

Sacred Space Blessing Chant demonstrates use of elemental cleansing tools along with the chant.

“He Ho, Pentagram Glow
Guard this hearth, this home, this land
And we shall be merry!”

Songs & Chants Can Magically Clear Spaces

Music is magical and transformational.  Blessing and clearing places with tone and rhythm and song brings spaces to life in enchanting ways.  (See what I did there…En-Chant-Ing?  Sorry…not sorry).  Songs and chants are also beneficial in creating clear energy fields for higher wellbeing, more enjoyable relationships, better focus, and more present everyday living.

Below you will find a list of links to some other songs for blessing & clearing spaces.

Note: there are many many songs for circle castings that include the directions & elements. I will save those for a future blog.

I hope you enjoy exploring these song gems as much as I have.

Blessed Be from Your Badass Bard-Ess,

Celia Farran
