Astrology for Autumn, 2024

Greetings, astrology fans and music lovers. The wheel turns, as it always does, now to the 2nd Equinox at Mabon on September 22, (6:43:37 AM MDT, Albuquerque, NM).

A fascinating chart, certainly for a holiday. Sun conjuncts Mercury and the South Node (there will be an annular eclipse on Oct. 2); trine Moon which is conjuncting Uranus across Taurus into Gemini; Sun trine Pluto at the end of Capricorn. And just to make it a bit more interesting, Sun opposes Neptune in Pisces.

All these planets and lights are the end or beginning of various signs which looks to me like a real crossroads of ideas and plans, beginnings and endings, mostly in harmony but the dream is feeling a bit confused. And last but not least, Pluto has dipped back into Capricorn a bit before it heads back into Aquarius on November 20 for the next 20 years!

A classic favorite chant for this time of year is Autumn Time by Libana. It’s simple, but very pretty when sung in a round, as in this recording. A good one to put in your rituals in the autumn, especially if you’re featuring the story of Persephone descending into the underworld, leaving her mother Demeter alone in the upperworld.

Autumn time, red leaves fall.
While the weeping sky looks over all
Demeter sadly walks the land
The dying grasses in Her hand

“Autumn Time” by Libana, from the album “A Circle is Cast” (c) 1986

Now, let’s dive into the charts for each sign.

Astrology for Mabon, 2024: readings

Aries

Mars starts in mid Cancer, not aspecting much now, you may be feeling a bit at loose ends. Starting around the end of October Mars slides to the end of Cancer and into Leo; then he’s making a lot of connections with the outer planets. Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and everyone else in succession. Lot’s of connections now! Go, Aries! Will be a busier than usual time!

Taurus

On Mabon, Venus crosses from the very end of Libra into Scorpio and keeps marching through to mid Capricorn. That’s like a march to the future! As Uranus, the planet of change is still in the end of Taurus, raising dust and thoughts and creative juices as it connects (with help from Venus) with the other outer planets. Looks like a rising wave.

Gemini

An air sign, your ruler is in Virgo, another sign it rules, but it’s earth there. Mercury keeps rolling along pretty quickly until late November then he retrogrades until almost Yule, and goes direct again in Sagittarius. It looks to be setting something up for future development. Being the mental sign, Mercury does make the rounds quickly. It likes to know what is happening.

Cancer

You start this period with Mars in Cancer. Seems a bit odd but Cancer can be very fierce in protecting itself and others. So really, this fits well. Or, perhaps you are off on a world jaunt! That is Mars too. Also, I see mid October, that Mars is moving into a T Square with Sun  and Chiron.  That begs of healing, Mars being the catalyst. Wow. Good energy.

Leo

On October 14, the Sun opposes Chiron (pretty close) and exactly squares Mars! It’s a floating aspect, quick to come in and leave but just that all the parties are within 1 degree of exact, that tells me it’s significant. Watch that date. This will be something pretty noticeable. Expect some sort of crisis, being pushed by an outside influence, forcing growth. Go with it!

Virgo

Your planet, Mercury, is in Virgo at the start of this period. So, at home with thoughts and doodling around with plans. Mercury is moving into a trine with Uranus and Pluto and the Moon! But also an opposition to Neptune. Some deep thoughts around changing things, how you feel about that, the deeper implications of the above, and finally, “is this a positive move?”

Libra

Happy birthday, dear Libra! This is quite the banging party for you! Looks exciting and perhaps more intrigue than you are used to. Or not. Your planet Venus is a bit to the side though just now but NOT uninvolved. A tight square to Pluto makes the case. A very passionate connection. What do you want? Two ships in the night? Maybe. It may moderate itself. Like you.

Scorpio

Pluto begins this period squaring it’s own sign, squaring Venus, trining Uranus. Sun trining Pluto. All at the same time. Busy times in the sky! Pluto is at the bottom of the chart in the 3rd house. This could be a push regarding a relationship (or wanting one deeply), feeling adventurous, perhaps a bit reckless but unsure how to proceed. Time to see the world change.

Sagittarius

Jupiter starts direct but hits retrograde motion in October and keeps that up well into February and stays out of major aspect to the other planets. Curious. There is an opposition to Venus in November; moderation will be key then in love. Of course aspects to the Moon always happen. But even then it’s in an opposition so be careful about going overboard.

Capricorn

Saturn begins in Retrograde in Pisces and by Yule ends up almost where it started in September. So, negative progress; it happens at times. The Moon of course crosses over and squares and opposes during this time. I see this as Saturn working (as it does) through Pisces energy and creating form and order right there in the middle of it. Can be uneasy. It’s OK.

Aquarius

Uranus is still hanging out in later Taurus. Mr. Excitement with Mr. Laid-back-&-chill. It’s kicking up the dust there, squaring its own sign, so kicking it up there. Getting ready to make a trine to Pluto in a year. That’s good, if you like exciting change in a mental way. Should be good news really. No huge shakeups that I see for now. In 20 years a different story.

Pisces

Neptune still hanging in there in the end of Pisces. A long one too. Will pass out next year for a bit, then back into Pisces, then into Aries. As usual with the outer planets. Slow dance and fine tuning the psychic antenna. Interesting with Saturn following up with logic and form. Interesting pairing. They are alone in Pisces but will not meet up here. Ships in the night.
