“Great Dragon, I beseech you-
“Magna Draco” – Dream Tunes & Dragon Tales, Alexander James Adams
Sear my wounds!
Let my screams be your breath!
Lift me on the wind of my will!
Let me burn my shadows to ash!
Let me rise triumphant on my fury!”
These are the words I used to heal myself once, in a time of deep pain and anguish.
Dragon Power
Any one of us can summon the power of the Dragon. It is part of us all.
A creature of great strength, passion and fierce, rigid ethics, the Dragon is not to be trifled with. Lately, there seems to be a trend to soften the harder details of our idols and deities; to smooth the edges of the darker, sharper aspects so as to not make them so intimidating, to make them gentler or more loving. It is the personal opinion of this humble Warlock to disagree with that trend. Intimidation is the great selector. It decides who can wield the power and who needs to learn more about that power first.
Dragons deserve great respect. If we wish to have Their favour, we must be ready to be challenged by Them and meet that challenge with the same formidability and infinite commitment that They embody. If you find a deity or icon intimidating, chances are that there is some part of you that is threatened by it. If that is the case, find that part of yourself and do the work needed to be able to summon and hold the power that inspires fear in you. Mastering your inner dragon is a great undertaking.
The Nature of Dragon
The Dragon is accepted by most of us as a creature of the elements. Popular Western thinking associates Fire with the Dragon, but in the Asian cultures, these creatures can manifest any one of the four elements, more often water, or with other kinds of ideals such as Luck, Wealth, Purity, and Vengeance. They become creatures of inner strength, wisdom, and balance.
I like to integrate the concept and symbolic power of the Eastern Dragon, based on its history of worldly aspects, with the Western Dragon whose history seems to be built on the manifestation of Ruling Monarchy, if not without a little Fear and Destruction. When I do that, the Dragon takes on an incredible mantle of useful power.
It is a power that can be found as a force of Nature to be tapped into; a hurricane, a heat wave or a polar vortex. You can bond with it to rend something apart, burn it to cinders or freeze it in its place.
Protection. Fierce and powerful. Free and wild.
Connecting to Dragon
All these things and more, the Dragon can bring to you if you know how to find Him/Her. I find Him during my travels across the country. There is something about open sky, fast moving land formations, ever changing environments and pockets of weather that whisper and call to me.
This call is heard in all of us. Find a moment when you can sit or lie down alone and undisturbed. Focus on the things that bring you inspiration. Connect with the moments, people, places or things that fill your heart with that fire that while blazing brightly, brings you a sense of calm and quiet strength. That feeling that no matter what surrounds you, you are safe, centered and holding great energy. Then, when you feel that deep, rich stirring in your soul, you know that your Dragon is awake. Now is when you can bring your needs and issues to Its attention. You will see things through the eyes of this great beast, and you will understand that there is nothing that can truly take this power from you. You have become the Dragon and He/She is now able to move through you and your actions. Listen to your hot breath. Feel your supple spine coil and flex. Let your strength grip with the tips of your fingers and toes like claws into that which lies under you. Throw back your shoulders and stretch your legs and arms. Do you have wings? Can you feel your tail lash behind you? How does it feel to roll your head back and forth on your neck? Do scales fold over on themselves or does your leathern skin ripple over your muscles and bones?
Living with your Dragon
Much like any large animal, once you admit a Dragon to be part of your life, you will find there is a good deal of care and management involved. If you have held your Dragon in a small cage and release it now for the first time in a long while, be prepared to provide space and safety for a creature that will possibly explode into a magnificent show of emotion, energy and expression. Your Dragon may well have the need to demonstrate loudly about something that you have not allowed to be acknowledged. Perfect Truth is one of the main characteristics of the Dragon. Your Dragon guards your suppressed secrets like gold and now those secrets are staring you in the face. You must now be ready for the responsibility of accepting and dealing with them, and sometimes, that is not easy.
Dragon Energy: A Caution
There is a danger in that once you get exposed to even just a drop of Dragon blood mingled with your own mortal flow, you can be consumed by the intoxicating self-empowerment. Dragons are not human. They think and feel in a much deeper detail. When you connect with your Dragon, you can feel invincible and capable of super-human deeds. This kind of power can threaten the ethics of a mere human and make them think they are above and beyond the oneness of the world. They can become arrogant, self-concerned and that serpentine scaling can harden them against their natural empathy and the Perfect Love that so attracts them.
But do not despair. Dragon Magic is capable of great change, but that transformational power does not have to corrupt you. It has the strength to embolden you, give you perseverance, courage and the ability to overcome your fears. If you are to be a successful Dragon Master, you only need to follow your heart’s direction and not second-guess it with your head. Keep your love and oneness with the world and you will not go wrong. You and your Dragon will guide each other equally with kindness and respect. You will embody your inner Truth and protect it.
I will leave you with a song written for such a person; suffering from a fatal illness, she committed herself to transition her body into her proper gender as far as she could before she flew from this mortal coil. A purple Dragon, she indeed achieved her Truth proving that it is never too late, and we are never too weak to become the stuff of dreams. Remember: Your Inner Dragon Awaits You!
