Hekate’s Torch: a Band, a Tribute

From our perspective, the Goddess Hekate—the Goddess of Magick and Witchcraft, also known as the Queen of Witches—was originally a solar deity, and there is evidence to support this theory. Before being conflated with other goddesses, She was revered as the Sun itself, and Her power reaches us through Her Torches. Long before the patriarchal god claimed dominion, Hekate ruled absolutely over the earth, seas, and skies—not even Zeus stood above Her. Over time, through syncretism with lunar goddesses, Hekate became the complex, multifaceted Goddess we honor today. Our song is a tribute that tells Her story.

Femmy and Robert of Hekate’s Torch

Song That Inspired The Band Name

It was the summer of 2016. Femmy and Robert were still best friends and served as the High Priestess and High Priest of our coven, Creatrix Magick. Together with another Pagan friend—also a musician—we decided to start a Pagan rock band.

At first, we chose the name The Oracles, but a quick Google search revealed that a well-known band from the 1960s had already claimed it. Back to the drawing board. We needed a name that was truly unique—one that reflected our spiritual path.

Although we hadn’t settled on a name yet, we had already begun writing our first songs. In one conversation, Femmy shared the story of her initiation by Hekate in the Amazon jungle. Her test involved getting lost in the jungle on a Dark Moon night and finding her way back with her sister, guided only by Hekate’s torch. You can read her full testimony here.

One of our very first songs was about the Hekatean Path. Looking back, it feels as though the name and the music were already finding each other.

Honoring Hekate

The lyrics began with everything we knew about Hekate—her epithets, her history, and the many conflations surrounding her. Soon, however, they evolved into an anthem to the Goddess herself.

Many see Hekate as a Goddess of Darkness, yet she is the Torchbearer—the one who brings light into the dark. This is why she was associated with the sun and revered as a Solar Goddess in ancient times.

After shaping the musical structure, Femmy was inspired by a dream in which the melody of the song simply came to her. The chorus emerged as a chant-like refrain, something you could sing while drumming together in a circle.

Meowstro and Band Supervisor, Ebony

Home Studio Shenanigans

Where all things musical happen—our home studio—is always supervised by Ebony Heqet-Johnson, who comes and goes as she pleases and communicates her opinions telepathically. Unless we miss the message. Then she meows.

The instrumental parts were already fitting together nicely, but everything truly came alive when our friend and multi-instrumentalist Marcos Tadeu added the synth layers. They elevated the vocals and gave the song its distinctive colors. Still, it wasn’t until we received the final meow of approval from Ebony—the Meowstro of the band and our Familiar—that we knew the song was ready.

Prayers For Good Weather

When you live on an island in the Pacific Ocean, the weather doesn’t always cooperate—unless, of course, you’re a witch. We thanked the Goddess for lending her support to our good-weather spells as we began filming in December.

We often joke that we live in the tropics of Canada, since we rarely see snow in winter and our summers are only mildly warm. Still, we felt called to capture a few snowy scenes, so we drove several hours north into the mountains, where we found the perfect winter landscape to begin shooting the music video. With our home so close to the ocean, we also filmed along the beach before wandering into the forest.

Many times, Femmy would wake in the middle of the night, inspired by the Goddess with visions of scenes, magical instruments to use, and the best angles for each location. In the end, we can confidently say that Hekate Herself directed the video.

Do We Really Need A Date?

The song was finished but not yet released, and we were still filming scenes while teasing both on Instagram, promising they would be coming soon. But for some of our fans, “soon” was simply not enough. The questions started pouring in: When is the release date?

As independent, fully DIY artists, we hesitated to announce a date before we were absolutely sure we could meet it. The last thing we wanted was to overpromise. But Team Torch had other plans. The most dramatic moment came when one impatient fan reposted one of our reels to their stories, tagged us, and cried out: “Hekate’s Torch, WHEN IS THE DATE? You can’t torture us like this!”

Oh, Mother … all right, then. We do need a date.

So we took a leap and made our best guess: When would the editing finally be done? Let’s choose the last Thursday of January and simply do our best. Little did we know that She may have been guiding us all along—toward January 29, 2026, a date charged with the power of double Master numbers.

The Light At The End

Our main takeaway? Hekate truly enjoys challenging us.

During the final week, our internet connection began failing dozens of times a day, turning the editing process—entirely dependent on the Cloud—into a tremendous test of patience and endurance. The service technician couldn’t come until after the video’s release, so we were FORCED TO EMBRACE the SH.. circumstances.

But that wasn’t all. After days of nonstop work at the computer, Femmy was suddenly struck with carpal tunnel syndrome. Offering the pain as a sacrifice to our Goddess, stopping was never an option. What began as a creative project now felt like an Initiation—another rite of passage in devotion to Hekate. We took turns as days blurred into nights and household chores piled up around us. There was a deadline, and we were determined to meet it.

January 28 finally arrived, and at 9 p.m. we were still editing—while the video was scheduled to premiere at midnight. Panic? Nah. When you serve the Queen of Witches, you pray. We could certainly use a magickal intervention.

At 11:30 p.m.—just thirty minutes before the premiere—the light at the end of the carpal tunnel finally appeared. We finished the edit and uploaded the video in the nick of time.

Magick. Is. Real.

Hekate your torch, eternal flame
Hekate your love, we will proclaim
Hekate you warm, our hearts again
Hekate you take, away our pain

We embrace our freedom and we make our choice
We are bold at the crossroads when we hear your voice
We see your signs
In every liminal place
Giving us strength
Against the fears we face

Enlightening the shadow and all things between
Illumination and balance
Let us see the unseen

Your fire kisses shackles away
You are the warrior and healer
Bringing justice with grace
Upon this journey
You dry our tears
The light of your torch
Dispels all our fears

Hekate’s Torch burns
Brightly in our heart
Lighting our path
Through danger and dark

Hekate your torch, eternal flame
Hekate your love, we will proclaim
Hekate you warm, our hearts again
Hekate you take, away our pain
