Rising Sap

Credits

Ah, the Green Man! This song is very much in classic Crow Women style, with many overlapping chants all leading to a single voice telling of making love with the Green Man in the spring. It was written by Alane Crowomyn during the spring of 2020. Composing this song helped her stay connected with the energy of the Leafy Lord during that time of pandamic isolation.

The song begins with Deb’s voice introuducing the “rising sap” theme, then the voices of Marilyn, Laura and Carole add two more simple chants to the Green Man. These musical themes pause while Alane sings the central solo. Then the layers begin to stack up once more, including a descant echo by Tara. The percussion is by Echo Nightfire (Issa) and Tara plays ukulele.

This song is track 1 on our album Pantheon: Honoring the Pagan Divine. The whole album is available for sale here on Bandcamp, and this song can also be purchased as an individual digital download.

Rising Sap was sponsored by Sweet Pea, who dedicates sponsorship of Rising Sap to The Green Man and to Mother Gaia. “Thank you Lady and Lord…Life…for the sweetness of all the treasures we encounter along the journey.”

Lyrics

Rising, rising, rising, rising sap
Rising, rising, rising, rising up

Green man, leafy lord
Bring life to the world

Green man, bring life

The green man beckons, “Come lie with me beneath the oak trees”
Over his shoulder I glimpse the sky as we touch the divine
He is the glossy leaf, he is the sown seed, we are the spring freed
Wrapped in his arms, his salt on my skin, I merge with him
