face of old man

The Elder God is Wise

Credits

Alane Crowomyn wrote this song to honor the gifts of our sages and the elder gods they embody on earth. It was composed with input from Alane’s friend Falco, who provided Alane with an essay on what it’s like to be an old pagan guy, at her request. The song doesn’t rhyme because Alane was primarily interested in capturing Falco’s insights rather than wrangling them into a rhyme scheme.

Donna Pauline recorded the piece in Alane’s home studio, to make a practice track for people learning the song for a ritual focused on the sacred stages of men’s lives. Donna passed away before she could do a real studio recording, but we were able to take the practice track and massage it into the lovely recording you hear today. Vocals by Donna Pauline and percussion by Echo Nightfire. Native American flute played by Alane.

This song is track 5 on our album Pantheon: Honoring the Pagan Divine. The whole album is available for sale here on Bandcamp, and this song can also be purchased as an individual digital download.

The Elder God is Wise was sponsored by Rowan of Our Lady of the Woods in honor of her partner of many years, Falco, and the work he has done in the community in his long career as a Pagan priest.

Lyrics

Grandfather Sky, God of the sunset
Reflections of the day shine on in your eyes
Enjoy each moment, no hurry
The Elder God is wise

Grandfather Sky, God of the twilight
The sage your helper, he can advise us
of when to be firm and when patient
The Elder God is wise

Grandfather Sky, God of the hearthfire
Your warmth and humor revitalize us
Your love deepens with the years
The Elder God is wise
