The One Ring

“Cause it’s easy to be careless-
Easy not to think-
Easy just to vanish in a blink-
Denouncing your reality, such a simple thing-
A harmless habit, much as putting on a golden ring.”

When the movie “The Lord of the Rings” first came out, it was exceptionally well received. Released the same year as the first Harry Potter, the public was intoxicated by the quality of high fantasy finally returning to the cinema.

It was shortly after that that there came the merchandising of the movies.

I, like many others, was enchanted and empowered to embark upon dreams of great adventure and magic. Thus, I had to have many of the wondrous reproductions of the various objects of power that had appeared on the screen.

It was after I acquired a very specific item that it dawned on me exactly what might be happening magically, for real, in the world around me.

First off, what part of ONE ring did they not think about? Only one had been made, and for a very good reason.

The production company had made literally billions of golden rings with the cryptic, elvish words inscribed upon them that could conjure the Dark Power if uttered aloud in the right way.

Muggles of course would say; “There’s no real Sauron.” “It’s just make-believe.”

Make believe. Yes, that’s precisely what they were doing: making the belief real. Sympathetic magic is a real thing. If enough people believe in something or you keep believing in it yourself, that thing can become real.

Sure, folk wore the ring around their neck like the ring bearer, but don’t tell me that NO ONE tried actually to wear it. (Heck, I was one of them! Lol)

Okay … It didn’t make us invisible, but if you had tried weren’t you just a “little” disappointed?

So here we are, over twenty years later. Do you see what I see? Humans who are distorted by power, attempting to control all around them. People so fearful of diversity that they seek to destroy or exile all those different from themselves.

Perhaps there shouldn’t have been so many rings made.

Perhaps humanity has somehow overlooked the message of simplicity, respect, and acceptance that a hobbit embodies when faced with the challenge of confronting the Darkness in us all and succumbed to the “Come to the Dark side, they have chocolate!”

For myself? I truly don’t know.

What I do know is this:

We must be very careful of our words and our utterances of power.

To move forward through this current world of Darkness that we humans have created, we must be careful not to fall into the same thinking that took Saruman. Keeping an eye on your enemy usually involves being close to them. My grandmother had a saying: “If you roll in the mud long enough, it sticks to you.” We must always stay aware of where we are in our heads so that when we speak, it will not come from the wrong place. Words have the power to create action. The words we hear and speak create energy that manifests into inspiration which then promotes action.

Magic is Will and Word. The Will is the intent. The Word is the trigger.

Guns have triggers. We need to remember that our words are part of a tool that has great power to both preserve and destroy. Make the better choice.

If you have a ring that you wish to be a source of empowerment, I would suggest consecrating it with careful words and clear intent. I wouldn’t recommend using a ring like the swag that is sold as movie paraphernalia.

It could be as simple as a leather lace, a wire wrap, carved wood, or an actual ring that calls to you. It needs to fit you. Not just your hand, but your heart. Consider the material it is made from and feel whether it resonates true with how your magic resonates when you use it. Is it soft like leather or wool? Is it warm and shapeable like wood or silver? Is it hard and bright like diamond or platinum? And how are you wearing it on? Is it on your dominant hand? Which finger? For me, each finger feels different in what kind of control it possesses.

The thumb is for obtaining things, holding them to me.

The index finger, while very aggressive and accurate in its application, seems to lack the ability to empathize with the energy it conveys. It feels like I could send bolts of fire from it if I knew how to do that without burning myself.

For me, the middle finger seems to carry the most balanced energy, being capable of both giving and receiving magical energy at the same time. This makes it my first choice for directing magic, and yes, it is an excellent choice for expressing any counsel I would offer to someone who obviously needed to take their bad energy elsewhere. (lol)

The ring finger is an enhancement to the middle, being sensitive and tending to mimic its neighbor when moved, yet feeling more connected to the body behind it than the intention in front. It was believed as far back as the Egyptian era that there was a vein that ran directly from the ring finger to the heart, thus inspiring the tradition of wearing a wedding ring to symbolize a love bond. I tend to feel that this finger partners with the middle one and is the larger supplier of empathy during the implement of magical intention.

The pinky is the true balance of the whole hand. Also, being on the outermost edge, it connects to and receives raw energy directly and easily, with high sensitivity. It is excellent for collecting the energy around it, closing and linking with the thumb to harvest, taking in, or pulling away energy, much like Reiki does. When I practice Reiki, it is the strength and leading motion of the pinky that I use to strip away unwanted energy from what or whomever is in need.

Now that you have assessed the makeup of your ring and chosen the best finger to let it reside on, you can use your Will and Word to consecrate, awaken, empower and bond it to you and your magic. As I’ve already advised, choose your Words wisely. Think deeply on what you are saying and exactly what the words can and do mean.

For my One Ring, I chose these words. Feel free to use them yourself or make adjustments as you see fit, and remember, this is your ring, your judgment, your magic.

Blessings and strength to you.

From heart to hand and whispered lip
So back again, to fingertip
This circle round, shall be spell bound
By Magic found in mystic slip

To grasp what cannot be embraced
Retain what others have erased
To wield the power that makes all cower
And win the war when fear is faced

By Will & Word
This shall be heard
By those that know
Let it be so!
