In Pagan and Earth-based music, a spell song is more than just a melody—it’s an act of magick in motion. It isn’t written simply to be sung or performed; it’s crafted to shift energy, focus the mind, and weave intention into sound.
A spell song can offer protection, comfort, or transformation, depending on what the moment calls for. Over the years, I’ve performed and been surrounded by many such pieces, but one in particular—Traveler’s Chant—holds a special place in my heart, because it was born not from ritual, but from the long, quiet hours on the open road.
Finding My Songwriting Footing
For over twenty-five years, I’ve been part of Spiral Rhythm, a band that’s more like a family bound by joy, loss, rhythm, harmony, and shared purpose. Through decades of festivals and gatherings, I’ve stayed mostly in the role of performer rather than songwriter.
We’ve been blessed to have group members who channel words and melodies so naturally that crafting songs together feels like breathing. We “spiralize” each creation, layering in our collective energy until it becomes something alive. I’ve always admired that process—and I suppose, after so long, a bit of that songwriting spirit finally found me.

A Song Born on the Road
Traveler’s Chant didn’t start in a jam session or circle—it began under the stars somewhere along a stretch of highway leading to another Pagan festival. Our white SUV, affectionately nicknamed “Appa”, carried my family, camping gear, and a trailer full of instruments and merch across the country. In the late night hours my family would sleep or watch videos while I drove deep into the night, the hum of tires blending with the rhythm in my head.
While driving, coffee usually helped, but only for so long. When fatigue crept in, I needed something stronger than caffeine to keep me grounded. That’s when I began to hum—a simple tone at first, something steady to hold my attention. It was more reflex than inspiration, but over time, that hum turned into something else. A shape. A melody. A whisper of words. Slowly, the Traveler’s Chant emerged—a song of wakefulness, willpower, and quiet protection.

From Hum to Spell
Like many magickal moments, it wasn’t planned. It simply happened. Some of my most effective spells were born this way—out of need, not ritual. The chant developed into a rhythmic mantra, guiding me through the dark stretches of road. It was both focus and prayer, keeping me aware when the mind wanted to drift. In its repetition, I found both power and peace. What started as instinct became intention, and in that transformation, a song was forged.

The Journey Continues
Now, when I sing Traveler’s Chant, I can feel those miles again—the soft thrum of the tires, the breath of the night air, the simple joy of forward motion. It reminds me that creativity doesn’t always come from planned sessions or quiet reflection; sometimes it arrives when necessity opens the door. There’s magick in movement, and in listening closely enough to let the road sing back.
