New Beginnings Ritual

Welcome to the new earth. Rabbits have introduced a new super virus to the human race, and we will now take over as the new highest life form of the planet. Prepare ye, Homo Sapiens, for a world of banana dreams and carrot juice wishes! Mwa ha ha ha!

April Fools!

As attractive as a world ruled by cute little bunny rabbits might be, we really haven’t organized ourselves that well. But as long as my human momma lady is so distracted by all the other human issues going on in the world, I will be taking over the compute-her today.

Perhaps you aren’t familiar with this Crow Women blech (Oh, Mom says that’s “blah’g”. Okay, let’s go with that.) I am Roki, one of the many Crow Women familiars. I happen to be a rabbit. This is me:

Black and white rabbit sitting on an orange couch.

As long as I have the compute-her all to myself, I wanted to offer a topic about which rabbits are experts: New Beginnings.

A Lagamorph Take on New Beginnings

Spring is a time for new beginnings. Rabbits get new beginnings. Every day is a new beginning when you are a rabbit. Each day we wake up wondering what the day will bring. Will I get treats? Will I get banana? And will I get to run around and Chew On Things?

People have lots of new beginnings, but they seem to be more complicated. Should I take this new job? Will this new relationship work out? What will happen with this new project? Is it worth it? Am I headed in the right direction?

You really ought to stick with treats.

But my Mom says you all don’t always recognize treats when you have them.

I’ve been reading this Blah’G that these Crohewoymmyn are writing for you, and I think I get how they do it. Mom says if I want to, I can try to Rite a Write. Or was it Rite a Write? I don’t know. It’s all geek to me.

Anyway, while Mom is distracted and I have the compute-her, I want to help you people embark upon the new beginnings that are headed your way. So, here’s my Rite on New Beginnings.

Mom says there is a Right way to Rite, so pick the right way to rite for you. I understand that can include making the the right smells and the right sounds and making things damp. I’m not a fan of damp, but the smelling and listening could be fun.

Have you done the Rite things? Okay, then we’re ready to start.

For your Rite, I offer you the magick of Rabbit. The magick of rabbit is all about new beginnings, spring, abundance. But what we also understand is how to change direction while staying grounded. This can be very helpful when you are beginning something, because the path may not take you where you think it will at the start.

A Meditation on New Beginnings

Close your eyes and focus on your breath.  Breathe in life through your nose, filling your stomach, your back, your chest, your throat, your head.  Release through your mouth, letting go of all worries and cares.  Repeat, allowing your inhale and exhale to be of equal length.

Now see yourself at the foot of a tree.  You know at once this is a magickal tree, a portal to other worlds. Observe the tree, its shape, its height, the texture of the branches, the color and shape of the leaves. Is it straight and tall?  Or twisted and curled?  Could it be easily climbed, or are the braches high above your head?  Commit this tree to your memory. Maybe rub your chin against it and claim it for good measure.

Notice that at the base of the tree is a hole between the roots.  The hole is just big enough for you to squeeze through, so you follow your curiosity and slip into the hole and into the tunnel beneath the earth. You crawl through the roomy tunnel, following the light ahead, and you notice that the tunnel is taking you steadily downward.  Smell the rich earth around you, feel the cool dirt beneath your hands as you progress onwards into another place.

This might be a good place to leave some pellets. I’ll wait…

The tunnel opens up before you into a small room beneath the tree.  In the middle of the room stands a small table and on that table is a key.  You pick up the key and find that it is an ancient key made of brass heavy in your hand. Wondering why the key might be there, you look around at the smooth walls of the room.  There on one side, you see a door.  On the door is an old brass lock that looks much like your key.

As you approach the door, consider your feelings about it.  Are you excited to see what lies beyond it?  Fearful?  Worried?  Joyful?  Do you have guesses about what the door will reveal?  Or is this a mystery to you?  When you reach the door, put the key into the lock and find that it fits perfectly.  If you have felt any fear or trepidation or regrets about what you will find behind the door, you find that all those concerns have melted away as you fit the key in the lock.  All you feel now is hope and happiness, for you know that this door is leading you to exactly where you need to be.

A pretty woman walks up the steps to a door in the side of a cliff. The door to your new beginnings is surrounded by candles and mystery.

Turn the key and slowly push open the door.  What do you see?  Is it a place?  A person?  Maybe a creature or divine being?  Is it a banana?? Whatever is revealed to you is where your heart is taking you.  It is your heart’s message of what you need and where you need to be to live your authentic life.  Take a moment to walk around.  See what is around you.  If other beings are there, talk to them.  They have messages for you.  Spend a few quiet minutes to explore and understand this place.

You feel a nudge at your heel.  You look down to see Rabbit, softly nudging you with her nose.  She stands up on her hind legs and you see that she is holding something in her teeth.  Take what she has offered you.  It is her gift of new beginnings.  If you need explanation, she will give it to you.  After you have taken and understood Rabbit’s gift, reach in your pocket and find that you have brought a treat.  Give Rabbit a treat with your thanks for her gift.

White and black rabbit chews on some dandelions in a bowl.
Your offering is acceptable to me.

When Rabbit has eaten her treat, she begins to hop away from you, and you understand that you are meant to follow.  Soon Rabbit leads you to a path.  You know that this is the path away from this place, but you also know that by following this path in the other direction, you will be able to reach this place again.  Knowing that this the path you will soon need to take in life, play close attention to the path.  What is the path made of?  What surrounds it?  Is the path smooth and straight, or rocky and twisting?  No matter what form the path takes, remember that by staying on it, you will reach where your heart wants you to be.

A path through sagebrush and grass leads to rock formations and an arch.

At the end of the path, you see the place you began this meditative journey from. Before you come back to yourself, turn and look back at the path you have taken.  Be confident that as you walk it again, you’ve already been there.  You know where it goes and how to get there.  And should you stray, Rabbit will always be there to lead you back if you’ll only pay attention when She nudges. Now come back to your seat.  Settle back into the now, at peace with where you have been and where you are going to go.  Take another deep breath in and release it.  When you are ready, open your eyes and be present.

Plant the Seed

Now that you know where you might be headed, perhaps you want to plant the seed of that path for yourself. All it takes is a small piece of paper and a plastic egg. Write a message to yourself about the seed of that new path and “plant” it in your egg. Then put your egg somewhere safe, buried in a drawer, on your altar or somewhere special in your cage… I mean in your house. Perhaps you’ll want to take out your egg at the Autumnal equinox in September and see if your seed sprouted the way you thought it would.

And finally, you should finish your Rite with a song. May I suggest Dance of Spring. You can hear the Crow Women sing it for you, too. They are super helpful that way. The easy part to learn goes:

Spring, springtime is here and the Goddess is near, O the Goddess is near.
Springtime is here and the Goddess is near, O the Goddess is near.

The Rabbit is near, too. (Just sayin’.) The Crow Women’s web-sight has lots of other resources for Springtime, including my eggs-sellent post from last year.

So, now you know the beginning of your new path. Hop to it!

Hey, what are you waiting for?
