solstice sun

Suncycle

Credits

Suncycle is on our album Crow Magic (track 23). The musical structure of the song reflects the growing of the light from winter solstice toward summer solstice, then the waning of the light as the year moves back toward winter solstice again. Alane Crowomyn composed the song to modulate up through 6 keys (six months) and back down again (the other six months). We recorded several takes of Donna singing the piece and blended them together. It’s a good thing she had such a wide vocal range! That’s Charlie on his beloved glockenspiel, and several other percussion instruments. You can buy a copy here.

Lyrics

Sun power grows toward the longest day
Sun power grows, sun power grows and grows
(repeat the above 5x, modulating up a key each time)
Sun power shines on the longest day
Sun power shines, sun power shines…then turns toward the night

Sun power fades toward the longest night
Sun power fades, sun power fades and fades
(repeat the above 5x, modulating down a key each time)
Sun power rests on the longest night
Sun power rests, sun power rests…then turns toward the light
