Sexy Beltane Potion

Beltane is one of my favorite holidays. By May 1st springtime has really arrived, the flowers are bursting forth and joyful sexy energy is upon us. The symbolism of the Maypole being placed in the earth and sheathed by ribbons, while being a fun and joyful ritual in its own right, is also a symbolic enactment of union, the phallus joining with the womb, the joining of different energies coming together. It is a time of handfastings and weddings and other types of unions.

The act of a sacred chalice and blade being brought together in ritual to invoke the uniting of goddess and god energies also expresses this idea. Chalice to Blade, a song by the Crow Women on our album Crow Goddess, celebrates these sacred energies and is a great song for Beltane and handfasting rituals.

So it always seems appropriate to me to create aphrodisiacs and love potions to fill my ritual chalice with, its my way of contributing even more to the playful generative energies of Beltane. One of my favorites is an aphrodisiac brew of herbs, brandy, honey and chocolate. The spicy and energizing herbs infuse into the brandy, which holds their properties and preserves them. Honey is a magical elixir made by female honeybees after they collect pollen and in the process pollinate the flowers which flourish at this time of year. Pollinating, by the way, is a fancy word for assisting with the act of plant sexual reproduction. Without those magical bees rubbing their little bodies around inside of flowers much of our food would not exist since flowers are not always able to move the pollen (plant sperm) into the pistil (the vagina and womb of the flower) on their own.
I don’t need to explain why chocolate is sexy right?

Love Cordial

  • 1/4 cup Damiana
  • 1.5 Tbsp. ground Cinnamon1
  • Tbsp. dried Ginger
  • 3/4 cup Brandy
  • 1/2 cup Honey
  • 5 T. Cacao Powder (raw chocolate)

Put the herbs and brandy into a blender and blend for several minutes or until the blender is slightly warm. Once the herbs are infused in the brandy strain them out of the brandy with a coffee filter or muslin. Rinse the blender and then put the strained brandy back in the blender with the honey and chocolate and blend for a few more minutes. Pour into a pretty jar to store. Serve in small cordial glasses or ritual chalice. This is a very strong elixir and is best sipped. You can also try adding a little bit to milk for a lighter beverage.
Enjoy!
